My opponent was having connection issues, and happened to disconnect in a bastion. After they disconnected, their client seemingly held on for a second or two. On their end, they achieved "disable shield", died to a brute, and respawned in the overworld. The replay shows them moving in the overworld with the disconnected "X" beside their name, before they stop moving and disappear from the replay (i.e. properly disconnect). They stayed overworld for the rest of the game.
On my end, I saw them disconnect while in the nether. 2 minutes later when they reconnected, they immediately achieved disable shield. For the rest of the game, the tab list said they were in the nether.
I believe that upon reconnecting, the client will re-send any "goal completed" messages to the server. The client doesn't send a "this is the current dimension" message, leading to the server never updating the tab list, and I end up thinking my opponent never left the nether.
It's a very niche scenario of "dimension change via death in the 2 seconds before properly disconnecting", but it changed my playstyle. When I found an enter 10 mins later, I thought they'd been in the nether for 10+ minutes, and I needed to rush to snipe nether goals.
